Brasil’s slum problem is well documented and known across an increasingly networked and informed world in all senses of globalization. Slums exist across the world, often completely disconnected from basic infrastructural services. Working under U-TT, the SLUM Lab is exploring multiple options in supporting the many challenges facing the neighborhood of Grotao, in Paraisopolis, Sao Paulo. Uniquely wedged near the central district of the city, bordering SP’s wealthiest neighborhood, the largest slum in Sao Paulo has its own well established identity which must be well connected to the city and all basic infrastructure in the most local, self-sustaining way possible.

The proposal to support the slum, or the brasilian favela, is a linear urban farm model intended to largely self-sustain local food necessity by creating agricultural space on available unused surfaces and air. The project’s intention is to design a system which is reactive to and has little physical impact on the existing ultra-high density favela, while providing an organic presence in the community. The system would be built following the existing structural syntax of the immediate area, and run by the faveladores with local NGO’s.

The system logic is primarily concerned with introducing a responsive network of infrastructural connections with agricultural production which extends throughout the neighborhood of Grotao. The system’s nascency is based on the nature of favela growth, of decentralized growth in high redundancy, subjected to a continual evolution of forms. The system attempts a new way of mapping existing resources and physical conditions of the site while drawing the most productive connections between the houses.

The networked system seeks to spread infrastructure resources across the favela, generating a mesh with connective integrity by virtue of the system’s redundant nature. Growing from the inside out, strategic connections are made to network resources in efficiency of the specified parameters.

8 – Target Averages of maintained connections to each resource (# connections to resource / total # connections)
1 – Distance threshold in length of span to next house

This system analyzes demographic data images and plots intelligent paths between the favela houses, making resource-sharing decisions based on characteristics such as:

roadside (connections to sewage/water/electricity)
drainage area (slopes where water flows)
link to water source
land slope (“risk areas” vs. more build-able slopes)
income (average household income – changes very often)
no road connection (no link to basic infrastructural services)
density of building (more structural connections available)

This is a proposal for a rethinking of the island of Manhattan, by inserting heavy agriculture and infrastructure into the urban realm. After researching large scale utopian/dystopian projects of Constant, Archigram, Lebbeus Woods, Archizoom, Yona Friedman, Cedric Price, and others, my project proposes an architectural vision of Manhattan, suggesting juxtapositions of agriculture and the city. The building’s skin is an aperiodic combination of off-the-shelf components of greenhouse glass, curtain wall, and multiple sizes and configurations of glass and metal louvres, to express the changing interior program while providing the required type of interior light. Towers and spanning structures function as an integrated water tower system, replacing the rooftop towers nearby, and concentrating disposal and filtration.
The following are selected images from the proposal:

Housing Rituals + Urban Conditions
The studio begun with studies of household rituals and their performative / experiential qualities. By studying the phenomenological qualities of daily rituals, a deeper understanding of the interface of action and environment can be achieved.

Filmatic studies of urban conditions in New York City complemented the household studies and connections between the two were posited. In short videos, three distinct urban conditions of NYC were documented and calibrated by speed and direction of movement through the urban spaces. By studying the relationships between population density, spatial compression, movement, and the boundaries in which they function, we can reach understandings of what it means to feel confined or free.

In the left side of the collage is Canal Street, where we studied the syncopation of movement relative to other walkers, each with their respective destinations, formulates a weaving path in which boundaries (ex: street/sidewalk) are crossed. In the center is the Williamsburg Bridge, where the finite and directional qualities of traversing a bridge were noted. Certain household actions require a similar environment of focus and directionality. On the right side of the image is Central Park Ideas of horizon were formulated from focusing on connections between the observer, the sky and determined position relative to tall buildings which pierce the visual horizon created by the tree edges. In our prototype, similar light and view connections to the surrounding context will become the horizon which grounds the inhabitant of the unit. The winding action and continuity of moving through central park is similar to household cleaning. Connections are made in the short video, which help inform floor plan layouts.

Strategy for Wind-Harvesting Facade

Volumetric studies were tested by extruding the optimal site area and trimming the shape to optimize performance of light, wind, and views. The circle enclosed by the buildings (see plans) is a preserved park for which the light and views were optimized.
Wind : the volume is optimized for maximum wind channeling and harvest via surface geometry.
Views : The largest, most direct corridors aligned toward park and river spaces are optimized to preserve views for the existing buildings on site.
Light : The volume is adjusted for maximum southern light penetration, which augments toward the afternoon.

This section illustrates three spaces created by gaps in the aggregation of units, which were directly informed by the previous performative massing studies. Gaps designated as communal spaces occur at the intersections of optimal vectors light and view. Smaller gaps hold wind turbines, which collect wind at points determined by the fluid dynamics studies. The slight S curve of the overall section turns forward and backward across the building, changing the surface geometry to effectively funnel wind at specific points of concentration. This direct response to the shape of the surrounding context shapes the surface of the building while optimizing energy harvesting.

A rhino script drove the aggregation of units which changed shape in section across the mass in response to optimized geometrical conditions. The S shaped section changes from a froward to backwards (twice), with straight vertical I sections in between to provide elevator and stair cores.
When all architectonic issues are synthesized in the aggregation of units, specific moments occur, which we propose to be unique connections to the local context and sky. Outdoor paths expand into communal spaces serving the surrounding units. More green spaces are located across the facade as well as the roof.

Trusset Installation for GSAPP 125th Anniversary
Low Library, Columbia University
New York, NY
October 2006
with Columbia GSAPP students/faculty

Below is an installation of the Trusset, a space frame system developed by Phillip Anzalone and Cory Clark. Mark Collins and Toru Hasegawa developed a parametric space frame software, which formed the system of nodes, each having up to 8 connecting strut elements. Skin applications and details were developed by the design/assembly team, which I took a part.
